COEHS Programs
College of Education and Human Services Certificates

Students who complete an approved teaching program are eligible for entitlement. Students obtain the Illinois Application for Certification and directions for completing the application form at the student teaching orientation the first day of the student teaching semester. School Services Personnel and Administrative certification applicants should contact the Certification Officer in Wham 122 for the application and assistance in completing it. Belleville and Chicago student teachers should contact the Certification Officer to complete the application forms prior to their student teaching.


Students applying for out-of-state certification should obtain all necessary forms from the respective State Office of Education and submit them to the Certification Officer in Wham 122 for institutional recommendation. Upon completion, the form (s) will be mailed to either the State or applicant as indicated on the recommendation form.


A Listing of Approved Programs Leading to Certification


The following programs in Teacher Education have been approved for continued offering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as a result of the Illinois State Board of Education and the State Teacher Certification Board Tenth Year Periodic Review of Programs for the Preparation of Educational Personnel at SIUC:


Programs leading to entitlement to the Initial Elementary Certificate (approved June 14, 2002):

Elementary Education


Programs leading to entitlement to the Initial High School Certificate. (These programs, approved June 14, 2002, are offered cooperatively among the College of Education and Human Services, The College of Communications and Fine Arts, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Science, and College of Agriculture):

  • Agriculture Education

  • Biological Sciences

  • Business Education (Workforce Education and Development Specialization)

  • English

  • Foreign Languages:

  • -French

  • -German

  • -Spanish

  • Health Education

  • History

  • Family and Consumer Science

  • Mathematics

  • Physical Education

  • Social Studies

Programs leading to entitlement to the Initial Special Certificate (approved June 14, 2002):

  • Art Education

  • Music (Instrumental & Vocal)

  • Physical Education

  • Special Education:- Learning Behavior. Specialist do include working with children with


Specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, mental retardation, autism, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic or other health problems.

  • Speech Language Pathology


The following entitlement program was approved for continued offering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale by the State Teacher Certification Board on June 20, 2002. Its purpose is to prepare individuals to teach infant/preschool/primary aged children:

  • The Early Childhood Certificate Program


The programs listed below have been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education for offering in the College of Education and Human Services at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Successful completion of the programs listed leads to entitlement to the administrative endorsements identified:

  • Level I-General Supervisory (Special Education only)

  • Level II-General Administrative

  • Level III-Superintendent


The following entitlement programs were approved for continued offering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as a result of the Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois State Teacher Certification Board Fifth Year Periodic Review of Programs for the Preparation of Educational Personnel at SIUC (approved June 20, 2002):
